Get your Mac ready for service

To save time and protect your information, complete as many of these steps as you can before your Mac is serviced.

1. Make a backup

Back up your Mac https://support.apple.com/en-us/102307

Having a backup is important in case it becomes necessary to erase or replace your computer's startup disk during service.

2. Check your settings

Complete as many of these steps as possible to help ensure that the service technician can perform any necessary diagnostic testing. If you can’t complete these steps, the technician might need to discuss options with you.

3. Turn off Find My Mac

If your Mac with Apple silicon https://support.apple.com/en-us/116943 and macOS Tahoe 26 or later was previously repaired, use Repair Assistant https://support.apple.com/en-us/123128 to check for an unfinished repair.

If your Intel-based Mac has been set up with a firmware password, turn off the firmware password https://support.apple.com/en-us/102384 This does not apply to Mac computers with Apple silicon.

If you're concerned about the security of your data during service, either turn on FileVault https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/protect-data-on-your-mac-with-filevault-mh11785/mac or remove your data, such as by erasing all content and settings. https://support.apple.com/en-us/102664.
